Epigenetics

By Philip Wheeler

This is something ๐„๐•๐„๐‘๐˜๐Ž๐๐„ needs to know as ๐˜๐Ž๐” hold the power!
๐Ÿงฌ Epigenetics and Health – the quick guide
โ€˜Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes workโ€™.
๐ƒ๐ข๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ? Just because you have a particular gene or sets of genes past down to you from parents or grandparents etc, doesnโ€™t mean they are going to be expressed (turned on) just because they are present.
๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ง!?
That means they need to be turned on or off by ๐˜๐Ž๐”! There are various ways to do this, with largest and most powerful contributing factors being lifestyle habits.
Lifestyle habits are things like:
*ฬฒ Nutrition
*ฬฒ Sleep
*ฬฒ Stress
*ฬฒ Exercise
This is great as it means ๐˜๐Ž๐” have most (around 90%) of the the control over your health and what happens to you.
The old idea genes are โ€˜set in stoneโ€™ has been disproven! Iโ€™m XYZ because my dad was XYZ, or Iโ€™m +++ because my mum was +++ is simply not the case and this is scientifically proven.
There are some other external factors which are not always in your control, but you have the choice of how you deal with them.
*ฬฒ Trauma
*ฬฒ Infections
*ฬฒ Toxins
One of the most common non-controllable external factors I come across in clinic is trauma. This covers physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual trauma. Whatโ€™s important to understand is trauma does not have a set activation or destruction period, meaning something which happened to you at age 6, 14, or 21 for example, may only start affecting you in later life depending on how itโ€™s been addressed and dealt with. This quite often manifests itself in a multitude of ways including pain (physical and emotional) and disease.
โ€˜But what happens when I donโ€™t eat healthy, donโ€™t get enough sleep, stress too much, donโ€™t exercise, or donโ€™t deal with an attack or donโ€™t properly grieve a breakup or loss of someone I love?โ€™
Itโ€™s important to understand this is a long term thing and does not cause lasting damage immediately, but prolonged negative external factors start interacting with our DNA and they:
*ฬฒ Determine which genes are turned on or off.
*ฬฒ Which immune pathways are activated.
*ฬฒ Which hormones are secreted.
*ฬฒ Which biochemical pathways are activated.
*ฬฒ How your immune system is going to function and whether itโ€™s going to up-regulate or down-regular inflammation.
*ฬฒ If healing has a chance to occur.
*ฬฒ and much more!
NOTE: Environmental factors begin at conception and carry on until we die.
One very easy thing we can all do this very second is grab some water. Yes, the origins and quality is a huge factor, but for now just drink a large glass of water. Start your day with water and end your day with water. In between, drink more water!
